Three Reasons Local Businesses need Social Media to Grow

How do you talk to your customers? How do you tell others about your products, or your services? How are you growing your business? How do you know if it’s working?

Isn’t all of this overwhelming?!

Being one myself, I know business owners are stretched thin and time is a luxury to most of us. When you’re faced with the day to day demands of operating a startup or small business with limited resources, you often don’t have the time or the budget to put advertising at the top of your list of priorities. However, if you want to be successful, it’s non-negotiable.

But why social media?

Consistently and actively posting quality content on social media platforms is one of the most effective ways for small businesses to advertise, and as a result, grow.

Hello? Where is Everyone?

As of 2021, over 3.6 billion people are using social media worldwide, a number projected to increase to almost 4.41 billion in 2025. That’s a massive number, and one you can’t afford to ignore. And, if all those folks are online, you should be too!

Meet your customers where they work and where they play. I’m always telling my clients to consider their audience before they make any kind of marketing decision. That’s because, as business owners, it’s all too easy to get caught up in your own perspective. You see your customers walking through your door, or clicking on your website, and you’re not thinking about the other 99% of their day’s activities. A social media marketer is well aware of where everyone’s hanging out, what entices them to the platforms, and what kind of experience they want you to deliver. It’s time to let others get to know you and your company – build those relationships in the spaces where trust can be established, and keep on growing.

Time is Money, Friend

A former colleague once asked if I could put a number on the amount of time it takes to create a social media post, and I told him that no, it isn’t possible to say. Not even on average, because sometimes a single post can take all of five minutes to create and publish, while others require hours of planning before they grace our screens. But, most business owners simply don’t have that kind of time available to them, and time is your dollars and cents, guys.

It’s true. There are only so many minutes in the day to make money, and creating efficiencies is the name of the game. And when you know you need to have that element of outreach, it becomes non-negotiable and an essential part of your marketing mix (mostly because of the third and final point coming up next.)

So, outsource.

What’s Good for the Goose

Money is not the answer when it comes to good marketing - this is clear from the very many and very public missteps we’ve seen from national and even international brands. Instead of focusing on the amount you can invest in marketing, focus on the quality of your messaging.
